Ever since I came to the USA, the 4th of July has been a special occasion. All those fireworks, barbeque parties, gathering near the river banks or any lake- everything about the 4th of July makes me happy. This year I was looking for some places where I could go for fireworks. So, I thought I would share some info that I gathered from my search. Before even planning, please keep in mind that this weekend there is a heat wave warning. I know this is the Fourth of July weekend, and lots of events are already in line. So please be extra cautious about the weather and plan accordingly.
Tom McCall Waterfront Park is downtown Portland’s only large-scale fireworks display which offers fireworks with a city skyline view. There will also be a series of different events throughout the day at the waterfront blues festivals, you can check out here.
Further down the south, you can also plan for Oak Park 4th of July Spectacular. This is an amazing place to spend the day and watch the fireworks if you have kids. But you will need an admission ticket for it (everyone ages three and older needs a ticket to enter the park). More information can be found here. Fireworks will start around 9:45 pm.
Do you know the city of Tigard will have its first-ever fourth-of-July aerial drone show this year? Sky Elements Drone will launch 200 drones high into the sky above Tigard High School and the show will last for a good 13 minutes around 9:30 pm. The best viewing areas are the Tigard High School football field and adjacent field.
If you want to see the whole city view, fireworks, and Mt Hood in the background (if you are lucky), you should go to Pittock Mansion. This place is my personal favorite because of the clear view of the city. This is an amazing place for photographers. Remember, Pittock Mansion does not have any fireworks events.
Another amazing option is the fireworks view with the bridges. There are several bridges (Morrison Bridge, Hawthorne Bridge, Steel Bridge) spanning the Willamette Rivers can be good options for fireworks shows. Imagine the fireworks over the bridges and the reflection in the water below- such an amazing display. If you want to secure a prime spot, try to go early.
Please be mindful that most of the places are going to be crowded. To get a good spot, arrive early, and plan for the day. Also, please be respectful to the environment and practice “leave no trace” principles. I am pretty sure whatever you do or however you decide to enjoy- it’s going to be an amazing day. Happy 4th! Enjoy!
